Put a Nuke in It and make it AWESOME

Donald Trump and the US Navy just put the ’N’ in the BBGN — Battleship, Guided Missile, NUCLEAR. As Steve Green points out, what’s the use of having a warship defended by sharks with frikin’ LASER BEAMS in their heads if it can’t sail round the world un-refueled for FIFTY YEARS?

it would be astronomically cheaper to hire a hit squad to eliminate all leaders that are a world threat.

Wow, I really hate to be the one that has to pop your bubble like this (nah, who am I kidding? I love it) but … Poorly written action/adventure “B” movies are not a guide to rational foreign policy. They’re just entertainment. Sorry to rain on your parade. But hey, even though you messed up on capitalizing the first letter in that sentence you spelled everything correctly and even remembered to put a period at the end. Bravo! Those jail GED classes are more than just a way to pass time while you’re locked up and are finally paying off,… Read more »

Kommie Donnie!! Welcome back, buddy! How was your stay in jail this go ’round? Get to spend some quality time with your ol’ boyfriend Bubba? Your last post was 70 days ago, did they knock 20 days off your 90 day sentence for good behavior? Or are you just out on bail awaiting trial? Whatever the case, it’s great to see you alive and kicking, plying your imbecility with the finesse and skill only you can manage. The thing about drones is they get a lot of press. There’s still a buttload (buttloads being something you probably know more about… Read more »

After more than two months of silence I was afraid the law or other just desserts had caught up with our old pal Kommie Donnie. Though I’m magnanimously willing to forego the entertainment I derive from deriding him in favor of him getting what he deserves — I was going to miss the fun I have at his expense. He’s a sneaky little git. He almost always comes in and drops his little comment turds well after the episode is released. He knows that if he does that most of the live commentary is over and a lot of the… Read more »

Have YOU learned nothing?
Drones have limited range, battery life, are easily defeated by not-too-sophisticated jamming technology. All of which the US military excels at.
The only reason drones are as effective as they are against the Russian army is that they are fighting at a WWII level of tech. The Russians don’t have man-portable jammers, anti-drone ordnance, or effective ballistic shields.
The US DOES!

So why build big nuclear powered ships and not just, as has been suggested below, beef up a bunch of land bases on the mainlands and islands of foreign countries? While land basing agreements with foreign countries are important and useful they are often best when serving as support for naval power, NOT as a replacement for naval power. It is a common mistake of civilian mentality to conflate bean storage for trigger pullers. You need both but they are not interchangeable. A land base is power projected but fixed and stationary No matter how heavily you fortify and defend… Read more »

I am liking what Steve is doing with his backgrounds. This one looks like he’s sitting in an office in Norfolk with the USS Wisconsin behind him. (Could be another battleship, but I think the others of that class are moored side on to shore, not in a drydock like structure.

To deal with Communist China you don’t need to put all your eggs in one basket and call in an Arsenal ship. You have 15 hulking great islands: Japanese islands, Philippines islands, South Korea. Even part of Malaysia is in range and they are all loaded up with all sorts of fun weapons. Trumps been shipping stuff in since his first term. The Taiwan war, if it happens, is about defense in depth. Taiwan is line one; Japan and the Philippines is line two and with Tinian and Guam as the goal keepers in the rear. It will be Chinese… Read more »

Disagree. Taiwan, Japan, and Philippines are All with in the First Island Chain. ALL those bases and launch sights are well within the range of conventional biolistic and cruse missiles. If you go after Taiwan, you have to cut off the first level of immediate support. You’re not attacking one nation, you’re attacking three. The distance from China is not a problem, as the PLAN regularly conducts Navel exercises ware they surround Taiwan. That’s perfect cover for the start of a invasion. Remember that the civilian shipping industry plays a role in the Chinas navy plans, so add 500-1,000 fishing… Read more »

Adam’s right. You don’t know what you’re talking about because you THINK like an Australian that has been enjoying the protection of America’s nuclear umbrella for well north of half a century. Under that umbrella Australia has spent on social entitlements what it should have been spending on, and strategizing for, its own defense. Sitting around drinking VB or Castlemaine XXXX Bitter (my favorite beers BTW) with a bunch of your mates is not how sound, valid war strategies are developed. You might be good at something but this kind of stuff is not that. When it comes to giving… Read more »

There are three town/ cities in the USA called Trump, the coastguard cutter USCGC William Trump (named after a Normandy landing hero) and a general Trump from WW2. Remember what they did with the forts Biden renamed? They found a veteran hero with the same name as the confederate. So the Trump battle ship is just a steel troll for the USA enemies and the Dumocrats in congress. The name’s a placeholder.

You don’t “placeholder” name a ship. You might do that with a land base but not a ship. Renaming a ship is considered very bad luck. In our Navy a “class” of ship is always named after the first named ship in the class. Thus “Los Angeles Class” and “Virginia Class” submarines, “Arleigh Burke Class” destroyers, “Nimitz” and “Gerald Ford” class carriers, etc. If you knew anything about maritime/naval topics you’d know that. “Trump Class” battleships are not really a thing. I know it’s hard to do but you have to learn to tell the difference between when Trump is… Read more »

The most common ballistic system on all modern Western ships is the humble mortar tube. There’s a dozen on the destroyers. These launch antisubmarine buoys, smoke and flares, hot chaff and radar jammers. Some are humble line guns. One officer made the mistake of putting his hat on the mortar in a drill and watched his hat blown into the sea 5 miles away. He had to pay for it.

More bullshit. Maybe on Aussie tubs “the most common ballistic system,is a puny little mortar”. 12.7mm/50 cal.AA/AM/AP, 20mm & 30mm point defense weapons like the Phalanx, small arms rifles, machine guns and side arms are ballistic weapons also in addition to classic naval deck gunnery. Mortar, buoy launchers, line throwers and other specialty devices are not at all the same thing just due a similarity in functional design. A door bolt lock and a rifle bolt action lock work in similar fashion but a door lock is not a bolt action rifle and a bolt action rifle is not a… Read more »

Bill and the boys keep missing the obvious advantage of a defense alliance. Every allied port can reload a VLC system because we all have them on our American made ships. All NATO ports, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, 8 states in the middle east and three or four locations in Australia. You don’t need to go back to Hawaii to reload. The carrier groups off the UAE and Saudi Arabia is in full supply from those ports. Crew rotation is by the local airport and a Boeing. The only reason for a trip home is for maintenance of the super clasified… Read more »

You keep missing the obvious and RECENTLY demonstrated problem with “allies”. Like The Brits denying us the use of Diego Garcia and RAF bases (such as RAF Fairford) and Spain denying the use of Naval Station Rota and all other joint operations bases.

Maybe consider a little less correction and criticism of “Bill and the boys” and a little more study and thought put into real world issues? Just sayin’.
