One man, 36 hours, and seven hundred dollars: a cautionary tale about the future of my home for 37 years.
This was a pretty good video. Some of the scenes were out of proportion–like the two guys in hats walking in front of the camera view looked way too tall.
It will be curious to see how accurate this prediction is.
Bill – Brilliant! “Of course this is science fiction” … right? My kids quit their jobs, packed up trailer, and left. A short time later, I also voted w/my feet (2 years ago) and left. Anyone remaining there is either a brainwashed liberal lemming, illegal immigrant, trapped (family commitments), or perhaps are in a deep state of denial? I no longer have much empathy for those that choose to remain. BTW (Steve) Colorado is not much better. BTW (Bill) why do you stay? p.s. I plan to post some further thoughts below w/r/t the ‘costs’ of remaining in the land… Read more »
Warning: Long Rant, proceed at your own risk. Should I stay, or should I go? — the Clash Highest state tax around ~13% (CA) .vs. 0% (TX, TN, etc) Stupid policies driving state economy into the toilet like shuttering nuke because of some worthless fishy smelt in favor of intermittent solar/wind, resulting in highest $/kwh around (peak $0.70/kwh .vs. $0.10/kwh) Consistently highest gasoline prices (2X-3X what I pay) Attempting to ban very low cost natural gas (1/2 cost of electricity) High water costs w/severe restrictions & penalties (comply comrad – or else!). Add massive water bonds (buy out of state water, meanwhile… Read more »
I like how the uplifting music kicks in when LA starts burning
I left Los Angeles 13 years ago and it was the best decision of my entire life. I had nearly forgotten what life away from that man made hell hole was like. My life is so much better now it defies description. I’m not exaggerating even a little bit, every night I give thanks to God Almighty that I don’t live in that rat’s nest anymore. Funny thing … L.A. was bad back when I got out. It’s a LOT worse now and it’s not going to get any better. You frogs are just getting used to heated water. If… Read more »
Bill needs to get out of LA, fast. Head to Texas, Florida, Tennessee, or why not Ohio. Ohio is slowly getting rid of the state income tax and are talking about getting rid of property taxes on primary residences. And no Republian president has been elected without winning Ohio. State is solidly red. Heck, I’d show him around to the places that haven’t had a Democratic mayor or city council in, well, ever. Lived there for a while, nice place. Wedding and prom capital for several counties. Said to have more shops in the US except for New York city.… Read more »
Which town are you talking about in your first paragraph? Or is that for the whole state?
I grew up in a small town in SW Ohio–it seemed like a nice place to grow up. I returned to it about 8 years ago and it has degraded–at least appears to have.
The conservative town with a large bridal district that I lived in is Reading, in Hamilton county. Pronounced Red-ing, not Read-ing.
Thank you.
Don’t worry, I read it as Red-ing, not Read-ing. I grew up in Clinton County and heard of Reading.
Not too far from Hamilton county!
Ah, seeing even in the 2040’s Philadelphia has maintained its pristine, pre-rule of law appeal. Those classic reprobates.
Well done, Bill.
Plays like a montage from Heinlein’s Crazy Years.
Really love the term – Newsoming.
Let’s make that stick.
Pretty awesome!! Problem with it all is… Where do the people go? They take their ideologies with them and if not stopped, will destroy everything they touch. Millions upon millions of Scavengers loose upon the country with no purpose or aim, heading towards your community.
It’s somewhat, not perfectly but to a significant degree, a self-filtering phenomena. The people who care and have something to lose leave the big cities. The parasites on society stay because they can’t survive outside those same cities. As my good friend Harry puts it so aptly “You get more of the thing you subsidize.” Well, those parasites are subsidized to the point where they don’t know how and cannot live without those government entitlement programs. So they don’t leave. The rest of us are a different story. That’s what’s happening now but of course when total collapse comes the… Read more »
I’ve expanded the statement about subsidizing, but it’s still a good point to pull out by itself.
You get more of the thing you subsidize, make mandatory or make very easy. You get less of the thing you tax, make illegal, or make harder (like regulations).
And yes, I also consider you a good friend that I have not met in person….yet
Makes me so sad
Dystopia is so yesterday
Klavan’s “Trump Happiness Montage” is yesterday, too, though, with the Musk playground idiocy casting a pall over the zippety-do-dah.
I’m in the mood for Gandolph’s fireworks over the Shire. Bud Cort in “Harold and Maude” dancing away playing Cat Steven’s melodies. “Princess Bride” and the kiss to end all kisses.
Is that too much to ask?
Keith, that’s why I labeled it a cautionary tale. I do not believe the outcome is inevitable. Even after the 2024 election if you had told me that President Trump would send troops into LA to enforce immigration law I would not have believed it. I generated a few versions of LA as a stable, thriving metropolis in 2050. Perhaps I will do a follow-up if things get turned around, which is a real possibility.
“if things get turned around, which is a real possibility.”
From your lips, to God’s ears.
One of the biggest reasons I’m still alive, besides my Mother’s prayers, is a solid, immutable, religiously applied policy of … Plan for the worst and hope for the best. It is vital to not confuse hope and planning. Hope is never a plan. Bill is putting way, way too much stock in the “real possibility” of turning Los Angeles around. I speak from personal experience having lived there for many years myself. L.A. is already well past the tipping point. It was past the tipping point when I left. That’s WHY I left. True, I hated it there but… Read more »
With God all things are possible.
“Plan for the worst and hope for the best”. I say that too, but add, “and rarely get either”.
That said, I agree with you. Most of California, especially Los Angels, is pretty much gone. The best I can think of is that northern California splits off to form a new state, and the rest goes on its own way, being it’s own shitpile country.
In that case, we will see, once again, what happens when you go full socialist.
One exception: San Diego Naval Base stays US, like Guantanamo Bay.
With God all things are possible but I do not claim to have an inside track on His Will. I can only do the best I can do with what He gives me. So I always thought the Christian version of “Inshallah” was sort of just another angle on hope. I’m not against hope but like I said, it’s not a strategy. It’s a bit scary that we have to actually take things like what happens if Kalifornia becomes untenable — seriously. Yes, all Federal properties and lands belong to the United States of America and the people thereof and… Read more »
I had forgotten about the other US properties in California. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. You have other points that are valid, but I really do think that if California wanted to leave the US, let them. Just allow people to leave that want to. If they won’t do that…. I guess it’s Civil War2. And in any case, let northern Californis become its own state. There has been talk about that. There is precedent: West Virginia. Most of the insanity is in the south, especially in the cities on the coast. If they think they can pull it off, let… Read more »
