“The Merchants War” and “The Space Merchants” are upon us!
In the era of digital media that you are paying just to access … If you watch TV for two hours per night on an average every night and each of those hours has ten minutes of ads, in a year you have wasted 122 hours on ads. That’s more than three 40 hour work weeks per year. What is the value of your work week, what’s your weekly paycheck? That times three is what’s being stolen from you every year. Even at minimum wage that comes out to a significant amount of money that you are not transactionally consenting… Read more »
Reminds me of Michael Crichton’s Next. Been a few years since I read it, but I think I remember a scene where ad execs were trying to sell the idea of projecting logos onto the clouds in the air, and the fish in the sea. Call me a Luddite, but I don’t ever want technology to get that good.
You’re absolutely right Steve, when you’re already paying for something why should you have to watch adds as well? As a long time member I always think that when have to watch two adds in order to view The Right Angle.
On one of the RV travel videos I watch on YT (I think it was LongLongHoneymoon), the husband showed us the correct key presses to mute the noisy commercials on those gas pumps. I have to go back and find those keystrokes on that video and pass along to Steve so we can ease his pain. Now, if they made more commercials in the style of “Mike of the Dollar Shave Club”, or the British Princess hawking “Poo-Porri”, or even the Sherwood Forest Bloke hawking the famous “Squatty Potty”…..I’ll watch at least once! Dollar Shave Club https://youtu.be/LsPQFsPvMgM?feature=shared Dollar Shave Club… Read more »
The mute button on the gas pump is 2nd down on the right hand side
We’ve had an Amazon Prime subscription for years. The movies never had ads. Now we have to pay an extra $2.99 per month to stay ad-free. They get you coming and going.
Exactly how I feel as a BWN member and having to endure two ads before getting to Right Angle on billwhittle.com / rumble. Stop it! Steve is right.
I’m reminded of the TV scene with the toilet from the movie Idiocracy.
Yep, my pet peeve as well – advertising that blathers on about some drug you should ask your doctor if it’s right for you, and personal hygiene products graphically demonstrated and talked about with vulgarity that should never be seen from a screen or irl. Now, to be transparent I only see these ads briefly when I watch YouTube and my click skip response is lightening fast as soon as the time I’m forced to endure it is up. I’d also prefer to see ads that don’t feature multi-cultural b.s. Stop with it! Culture has reached a point so low… Read more »
Just when you think they’ve hit bottom, you probably realize that they are still digging.
I’ve not watched an ad on Youtube in years, between the ublock Origin addon and Ghostery. At least, not the ones that run at the beginning or interspersed in longer videos. The ads that channel hosts do themselves I usually kinda like, especially when they can show themselves using (or eating) the product. Want to advertise Raid Shadow Legends like the million other channels? Show me video of you playing the game. Want to push the Scottish Laird noble title thing? Show me the certificate you got when you bought one (or they gave to you to promote them). I… Read more »
Same here on never seeing YouTube ads. I watch all this on a very large compute with a very large screen (which is one of 7 on the machine) so it may be different for those who use phones or tablets for that stuff. I don’t know, that’s not what I use phones and tablets for. As for the ads the content providers put in their content, if I’m near my keyboard/mouse I usually just time skip past them. I haven’t watched an ad on a TV show or a movie in decades but I’ll comment on that in a… Read more »
I see these ads and hear them twice – that would be the first time and the last time. I finally installed an ad blocker. I don’t watch movies or shows of any kind that I don’t choose for myself, and none of them have commercials. I don’t use my iPad or phone to watch anything either.
