I don’t care about the Kansas City Chiefs, football, baseball, basketball or any of the other non-critical inconsequential pseudo-warfare nonsense bread-and-circuses that other people choose to spend their money, time and attention on. I have my own things I spend my money, time and attention on and most of you wouldn’t care about that stuff either. It’s a wash and you’re welcome to spend your money, time and attention on whatever you like. I only ask for the same consideration. That said, in my view it’s up to the people of Kansas, Missouri and their respective subordinate political strata to… Read more »

See, here you are injecting pragmatism into an emotional argument. How patently unfair.

That’s what happened with the Reebok HQ in Canton, MA.

When the tax breaks ended, they moved.

Here’s another perspective that should be considered. I live on the “Kansas” side of the KC state borders. I have supported the Chiefs and Royals in “MO” for almost 30 years. The current Truman Sports Complex hosting Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums has absolutely nothing to offer the attendees except the game itself. The traffic in and out is horrible also. (But honestly what large venue isn’t?)! The KS proposal, as I understand it, will have the new stadium in the area of the Kansas Speedway and surrounding “Legends” area, (about 25 miles west of Arrowhead still along I-70), which was… Read more »

It’s always interesting and informative to hear from someone who has actual “skin in the game”.

Thank you for that.

Sports and their effect on communities are varied, but just think where Tuscaloosa, Alabama would be without “The Crimson Tide.” The Atlanta Braves looked where their fanbase lived and plunked the new stadium in the county that supports the team the most. Stadium movements and fanbases have a long history of heartbreak and loss of tradition, but the owners of the teams are in an enviable position. The major majority of the top-rated TV shows of all time in our country are sports-related, primarily professional and collegiate football. Advertising dollars follow. Given streaming services, the only reliable eyes on the… Read more »

Thus it has always been, thus it will always be.

“… more pluses than minuses in the long run.”

Is not only the best we can hope for, it’s all that can reasonably be asked. Anger is almost always terminally short sighted.

The Chiefs can move to the Twin Cities. I think the Somalis can afford them…

the phoenix diamond backs did the same thing and it is bullshit. the tax increase was 1.3% and was suppose to go away after a certain time I don’t remember and don’t know if it ever went away. WHO IS GETTING BRIBED? the law IS uniform it is the corruption and double standards that is the problem.

You don’t live in Arizona so … What business is that of yours? It is after all a matter for the people who actually pay the taxes there and — YOU ARE NOT ONE OF THEM. Tell us, Kommie Donny, please … Is there ANYTHING that you’re “for” that doesn’t involve destruction of American traditions and institutions? Wanna discuss this? Didn’t think so. Cowardly little chickenshit bitch. Edit: I added that last word as an edit after you clicked the thumbs down on my reply to your bullshit. You make my point for me thereby. I consider a thumbs down… Read more »

One other point – the Hunt family has more money than Brinks

Based upon this conversation, it seems that, like Brinks, the Hunts’ money belongs to others.

The shiny new thing among many municipalities are Data Centers. Localities seem to falling all over themselves to incentivize giving up the land and infrastructure to have these built in their areas. From an economic development standpoint, this is short sighted. Data Centers consume an enormous amount of electricity and nearly as much water. But they employ very few people, so there is no tax base increase with “high paying jobs” at the end of the build. The company at which I work is currently gearing up to provide product to several clients for equipment for data centers and the… Read more »

Just curious about your opinion as a semi insider. I think the AI bubble is crazy, but I think the real money to be made will be in the energy companies needed to power them. As the old saying goes “The financial winners of the gold rush weren’t the miners – it was the guys selling shovels and picks.”
What say you?

Oh, without a doubt. It is the energy companies and the providers of other equipment needed to operate the data centers. Every large HVAC provider now has a Director of Data Center Sales type position. But these pieces of equipment used to keep the servers / chips cool use lots of power; along with the servers themselves. This is why the scalable nuclear reactors are getting pushed so hard. China can just build more coal fired plants (and notice the Environmental wackos don’t say a word) but we need to build other things. The amount of $$$$ going into the… Read more »

I suspect the money from AI won’t be the data centers as they are now, which are mostly training, R&D kinda shops. Its more going to be the ones that are successful with their software builds selling access (NFL or MLB with their stat crunching, analyzing, etc) or medical. Business trying to find and chase trends. Etc. The other will be companies that have the data centers and essentially rent the hardware to the previous software companies. Near me Microsoft is in talks to build one, but I’ve heard other names I do not recognize also mentioned for the 3-4… Read more »

Most of the HVAC are water-cooled chillers but many are being modified to air-cooled. Water cooled does consume some water, much less than the electric but a net consumer.
The air-cooled has a larger foot print but may be able to go on the rooftop of these large buildings.
The power is the biggest drag.

I live a little east of KC, MO (Warrensburg) and lived in KC for over 50 years. In fact I lived just down the street from Arrowhead Stadium for most of that time. A year ago Jackson County, Kansas City put a tax increase on the ballot to fund keeping the Chiefs in Missouri. The voters said “No!” I like the Chiefs but haven’t been to a game in many years because I can’t afford it. One of the things that always comes up when they talk about a new stadium is how it will spur business growth in the… Read more »

The only place I have seen stadium placement spur any growth as you mentioned is in Houston. In that case, the city planners took an underutilized section of the city that had a convention center and they placed the Rockets home on one end and the Astros home at the other end. There is also now a Soccer facility around the corner. B y having all three, plus the convention center, the restaurants, bars, hotels, etc become year round places of business rather than seasonal. Convention visitors routinely visit the restaurants and take advantage of tickets for events or gather… Read more »

One other exception I remember reading about was LA. They made it a heavy mixed use venue and the neighborhood where it was built was conducive to non game day traffic.
And that 8-10 uses per year drops if you have a team that plays a game or two overseas as Goodell tries to expand the games appeal to everyone but American actual football fans. That would be the ones who love the game without Draft Kings getting them to watch

For my local teams, the Packers in Green Bay made a tourist center near the stadium so that even in summer when there are no games, it is still a place to GO. As far as placement, the Bucks in Milwaukee picked their location and built up a “Deer District” so that people had something for prior to a basketball game in the evening, plus they do host conventions, concerts, and such and the district area has a large outdoor area that can be converted somewhat. When the Bucks were in the finals, they had a large screen where people… Read more »

That “homeless and hungry” argument always seems to crop up and it’s always bogus. Not long ago I saw someone on the Left decrying all the “homeless and hungry” people Elon Musk could be helping if only he spent his money on them instead of space exploration. It doesn’t matter which side it’s on or who’s making it, that argument is always nonsense. Because it’s a false alternative. It’s not “if Elon Musk wasn’t spending so much money on space think of all the people he could help” or “if the KC Chiefs were not being offered an unfair dip… Read more »

Funny thing there … Unlike Musk and the Chiefs THAT money WAS earmarked to help people who needed it. And THAT is who it was stolen from. Minnesotans tried to help people who needed their help and the Somalis and Democrats stole that money. It is the lowest form of despicable. It is literally the same as unplugging someone on life supporting medical technology to pocket the cost of the electricity and equipment that was keeping them alive. Worse yet, the proceeds didn’t even go to a better cause, they went to enemies of that poor bastard that is laying… Read more »
