While Democrat hopefuls Gavin Newsom and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sputtered and bumbled their way across Europe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a speech to the Munich Security Conference that was elegant yet simple, friendly yet firm, and deeply moral yet grounded in reality. It was the latest masterstroke from the most capable and effective Secretaries of State in living memory — and perhaps, of all time.

I would much rather Marco Rubio remain the Secretary of State through the change in administrations. His ability on the international stage and in the back rooms of geopolitical power enables presidents to concentrate on the domestic scene. I’d take Vance/DeSantis or whomever as long as Rubio is tasked with SecState. I think he would be wasted on the presidency.

Great grandparents came over from Eastern Europe. Grandfathers were a bricklayer and a janitor. They worked, they saved, and the future generations did better.
And I am ever grateful that they left Europe

Something to bear in mind is that the sort of person with a genetic and cultural predisposition towards desirable traits flowed out of Europe in a flood to The New World and specifically to the U.S. for a couple of centuries. Whereas the wealthy elite feudalists, their cronies, lackeys, toadies and stooges plus the timid and docile stayed behind in Europe. Which has significantly skewed the pool of people willing and eager to advance Western civilization in Europe. This phenomenon has poisoned the well of European politics. My ancestors were poor tenant farmers working land hereditarily owned by a feudal… Read more »

My feeling (maybe not fact) is that the major reason for the diminishment of Europe and its culture was the loss of two generations in WW I and WW II. The Beta-males left – most of the Alphas killed. Another of my feelings (again, maybe not fact) is that the children that didn’t have a chance to become inheritors of their parents land emigrated to America. The eldest, who did inherit, were mostly Alphas, America becoming America not because we were the smartest and most driven. We were the most free, the most capitalist (masters of free exchange), the most… Read more »

I’m sure those were all contributing factors also. I don’t think that America is composed of the smartest and most driven, I think America got where it has because of opportunity not necessarily intellect and ambition. I knew some of the people I’m talking about in my comment above and “smartest and most driven” would be a phrase I definitely would NOT apply to them. (My great-grandfather Albert was a Grade 1, Class A genuine SOB for instance.) They didn’t achieve what they did because they were smarter and more ambitious. They achieved what they did because they could, because… Read more »

Yes, the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13) types are the majority of what came here to America and left their homes in the Old World. Even that prick great-grandpa Albert was counterbalanced by the woman he married because my great-grandma Anna was widely known for being one of the very best people most who met her had ever encountered. Just as an aside, Anna came to this country as an indentured servant to Albert’s parents. Which is a slave in all but name. He raped her and got her pregnant so his parents forced him to marry her. Which… Read more »

Yeah! I’m half Slavic, for gosh sakes. They named it after my relatives.
