We are yet to realize how bad this is going to get. Imagine you are dumped into a country that has laws preventing you from getting a real job. You have mouths to feed. How long were you in VA before you realized that Bless Your Heart was a nice way to say something bad about you?
I was a freshman at college when I realized those sweet southern girls had a mean streak like any NY’er, just a nicer smile.
The “Bless your (his, her) heart” is not always a nice way to say something bad about someone. But generally you are correct. Examples: “He just can’t help himself cheating on his wife, bless his heart” Saying something bad. “Why, he just ran in the burning building, rescued the people in it, and went back in to get the dog! Bless his heart!” Saying something good. Tone and context has a lot to do with it. And boy, are you right about Southern girls and a mean streak! I do know that there are occasions where BYH is well intended and meaning. Maybe it’s the people I am around but I would say it is easily 80/20 in favor of the shot type of comment.
That ratio seems about right.
I prefer the more starightforward way of saying BYH that we used up in Jersey…
I’ve had prior experience with Southerners and I learned about Bless Your Heart so long ago I don’t remember the occasion. Southern girls are a different matter. Especially Southern Belles. They’re not all bustles, parasols and lace petticoats, or the modern equivalent. All that stuff is just the scabbard for a rapier that will cut your heart out. Northern girls can be as cold as the climate they come from but they can be warmed up. Southern girls can be downright scary. All that sugar-and-spice can hide a wickedly manipulative core. Even the past head of Greenpeace agrees that nuclear is the energy of choice for the future. It will drive cost of energy down. But the elites don’t want cheap energy because cheap energy saves the poor from poverty and helps them make decisions that are smart instead of out of desperation. Politicians don’t want to “solve” long range issues simply because it gives them a platform to argue against the other party. When they had the opportunity, GOP did nothing to help Trump push a border wall. Why, because they like being able to show what is happening right now during an election year. The DEM don’t want to stop illegal immigration because they want the votes down the road.
