My Clint Eastwood story, once removed. 20 or so years ago, my sister’s buddy, we’ll call her Sue, is in Monterey working as one of Clint’s executive assistants at Pebble Beach. A few years ago I truly enjoyed the blank looks I’d get when I’d reciprocate with anyone offering their preferred pronouns by giving mine:

Yeah, that was a fun movie but IRL every single one of those guys in Gunny Highway’s “unit” would have washed out early in selection. USMC Force Recon is NOTHING like shown in that film which was insulting but …
There are absolutely people like Gunny Highway. Clint’s portrayal of that role was spot on and brilliant.
Yeah, none of the troops who Highway commanded seemed realistic, but it was a fun movie. One part about the ending bugged me though, and I’m curious about your opinion:
In the battle at the end of the film, was Clint wrong to go ahead without Major Powers’ unit? While facing an enemy who had no means for immediate support, why would Recon move ahead when a brief delay could have given them overwhelming numbers? Or am I crazy?
It’s been a long time since I saw that movie so I went back and watched that part of it again. The part you’re referring to is a plot mechanism to make the dickhead major look like the dickhead he is as per the story. The thing about war movies is that NOTHING in the movie is like real life. NOTHING. You can’t learn a damned thing from a war movie about what real war is like. Because … War is life and death, for real. I’m hesitant to mention because I’m using my real name on this site but the young priest in Gran Torino, Chis Carley, is my cousin, his mother and I are very close first cousins, we’re a few months apart in age and grew up two blocks apart.I see Chris occasionally at family functions, sadly mostly funerals these days.

Yeah, hard pass on Sondra Locke. I remember having a mild crush on her seeing her in The Gauntlet with Clint. That crush did not age well
Yeah, but…..Sudden Impact was filmed in my hometown, I remember the hullabaloo. Sondra Locke’s character, in a car, on the cliff above Baker Beach San Francisco, uses a tiny handgun to blast the nuts off of one of her childhood r@pists. It created one of Clint’s Dirty Harry’s most underrated lines…..”What’s making me sick to my stomach, is watching you stuff your face with those hot dogs….I mean NOBODY puts Ketchup on a hot dog!”
