Once again I need to point out that just because this one person did this incredibly stupid thing and suffered avoidable consequences doesn’t mean this is increasingly the norm for the rest of the nation. Because of the gargantuan expansion of media information you hear about things like this now whereas 30 years ago you probably would not. People were doing stupid, entitled, idiotic things back then too. It has always been thus you’re just more likely to become aware of it now.

When Rudolph Giuliani came in and had the police arresting fair jumpers, people said why is he going after them when there’s so much other crime in the city? That’s how Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma City Federal Building bomber) got caught too. He didn’t have a valid license plate on his car and got pulled over for that. I looked back at my brother and shook my head. “That’s a mighty good sale,” I said. “Yeah, we’ve got good prices,” she replied. “I’ll bet no one’s gotten a better deal today,” I teased. “Bet it is,” she went on, looking at the next customer impatiently. “It’s like I only got charged for one board.” I kept on, worried I’d lose the ability to have her figure it out on her… Read more »

I worked at a McDonalds when I was in college, one of my very first jobs when I was something like 19 yrs old. A scammer “short-change artist” did a quick change thing on me and, even though I called a manager partway through the process after I realized that I had lost track of what had happened, that didn’t help. My cash drawer came up short, $20 I think, and I was fired from my job. It wasn’t even a matter of them asking me to make up the difference. I was summarily fired.
