PROJECT HAIL MARY: When Hollywood Doesn’t Hate You

Our own Scott Ott came away from a science fiction movie mightily impressed! Was it extensive use of practical effects and lack of dead-eyed CGI? Or is there a deeper magic that Hollywood has not only abandoned, but learned to despise?

Your review reminded me of the movie “My Dinner with Andre.” It all takes place in a restaurant booth with two characters. Goes to show that story and dialogue should be the foundation of any movie.

One other thing. Scott’s final statement;
“I feel like the filmmakers embiggened the art, and in doing so, embiggened the audience”

I feel like I’ve heard that before….

The reason I probably won’t go see this film is Ryan Gosling. I just can’t stand him. I don’t know what it is about him, but I think he has all the charisma of a ream of paper. I’ve watched him in several other movies, and the instant he comes on screen, I’ve lost the charm. In ‘The Driver’, he starts the movie well enough, because he’s SUPPOSED TO BE a blank sheet with no emotions or personality. Once they get into the love/action story, I just can’t watch. He can’t do emotion OR action. The other thing I can’t… Read more »

Critical Drinker interviewed Andy Weir. Highly worth watching. Andy Weir is also the author of the Casey & Andy webcomic, where I first heard about him.

I read the book when it came out in 2021. Read it again last year. Can’t wait to see the movie.

I got the book on Audible and have listened to it at least three times. It is a tremendous story with some unexpected twists. I really enjoyed The Martian, so I read his other books and this was exceptional.

I guess they finally found something to match the intellect and talent of Ryan Gosling, a rock

One of my wife’s favorite books. She was disappointed, as were most of the people who’d read the book, many hooting at changes from the text. But it “wasn’t bad.” So, …, there’s that. She’s a tough audience, and she went with her book club. Just a plug here, and I’m waiting to see “Project Hail Mary.”. One of my favorite books is “Life of Pi”. One of my favorite movies is “Life of Pi”. They’re not the same but both are exceptionally good. (“Life of Pi” is a whole different movie if you realize early on there is an… Read more »

They wanted to entertain you and, evidently did.

Another interesting thing about this movie is that the credits are surprisingly short. And I mean WAY shorter than what you would expect for a movie of this type.

Last night we did the rare family outing to see this movie, and I was impressed. I can’t remember the last time I walked out of a theater thinking a movie was truly great, but this was it. It’s amazing what Hollywood can do when they put aside how much they despise half of the country. One would think that they would learn from this, but who are we kidding? After this year’s Oscars’ two biggest movies being “Good black people kill bad white people” and “Antifa: The Movie”, I’m sure that next year’s best Picture winner will be a… Read more »
