Scott Ott brings us a modern update on the syrupy 1974 superhit by Morris Albert; the new lyrics are: Feelings / Nothing Less Than Feelings / Tying to forget my / overwhelming neurotic need to constantly harp upon my perpetually reinforced sense of being a victim of my emotions such as sadness or love… Okay, it may not scan as well as the original, but the idea that we are constantly making kids feel WORSE by always asking them how they FEEL is, thank God, starting to gain some traction.

Love it Bill, not so much “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as “Don’t Ask, Tell!”.
Regarding the log/motor boat analogy, I’d say life’s more akin to sailing a boat. You have control of the sails and the rudder, but not the wind and the tides.
“Stop It” a great Bob Newhart short you can find on You-tube. He nails the essence of what physiatry should return to. Very funny. Great post as always gents.
Never in my memory did my parents ask “How do you feel” unless it was in reference to a health issue. Never “What are your feelings” They asked how my day went, or how things went at school. I told them and often it was not pleasant. I was picked on a lot. The school seemed unable to fix it as far as I could tell with occasional little things being the exception. Example: Changed locker from padlock locked to integral locked. I had my locker broken into a lot. I showed them how easy it was to find the… Read more »
There’s a great illustration of the “state oriented” personality type on YouTube.
It’s a video titled “It’s Not About The Nail”.
It showcases a couple sitting in a living room setting. She’s complaining about the pain and discomfort that’s distracting her and making her miserable.
She has a 3-penny nail sticking out of her forehead, right between her eyes!
But every time the male attempts to point this out, she snaps at he’s ignoring her feelings!
The video is about 4:30. Go check it out for the distilled essence of what Scott is discussing here.
Feelings? We don’t need no stinking feelings.
Shut up and eat your gruel, you can have feelings when I’m gone.
This country has moved from being thinkers to being feelers. Nowadays one almost never hears someone start a sentence with “I think…” It always starts with “I feel…” It is all subjective, all emotion driven. And it fuels wanting kids to feel things all the time instead of using their heads for something besides a hat rack. Using their brain for something besides keeping their ears apart. My parents never said, “How do you feel about…” They said, “Use your head,” meaning “think about it.” But we pretty much have two generations who have been hovered over so that their… Read more »
STOP IT !!! So appropriate. First thing the doctor says. Only “How are you?” is what he or she says, and then I say “Fine, thank you,” because that is how we are raised. Then I want o say something I shouldn’t
When the doctor says, “How are you?”, what he’s really saying is “Why are you here today?”
It’s a diagnostic inquiry, not a pleasantry.
“Feelings” is all about ME, ME. ME. An awfully small world to live in.
STAY stoic as a MAN. Never show a woman your feelings as a man because it shows weakness and she wants a strong stoic man.
I agree with preparing your children for the world.
Scott is still out of focus
Yes he is and that’s because they shoot these Right Angle episodes all in one batch right after they shoot the Backstage episode. If you’ll notice they’re wearing the same clothes all week. Either they shoot this all in one day or they all lack access to laundry facilities. Thus any problems with the Backstage audio or video are very likely going to be carried over to the following week’s Right Angle(s). Unless sometime during the post-Backstage shooting they discover and correct whatever issue Backstage had. Scott’s video is likely to be blurry until after the next Backstage release. If… Read more »
